Event photography is one of the most advantageous ways to make money with your digital camera because people will always want their events and memories to be captured with perfect precision. No matter how low the stock market, there will always be wedding parties, they are going to graduate, and they are going to have birthday parties. These are all events that can earn you some extra income.
You will need to build up your portfolio before you can start get the extra cash with event photography, however. Your portfolio will be the examples of your work. The best way to start building up that portfolio is take a few event photos for free or get permission to tag along with a professional for some candid shots. Even though you will not be getting paid for this, you will be getting priceless experience and see if you will like this job or not and you will be creating images that people will judge your quality of work by. So the more experience you get, the better your images you will get and the more you will be able to charge for your events.
The required thing in the event photography is preparation. Before you even leave the house, imagine what shots you want to take. You should choose the right lenses for the job. If you are only have a few mid range lenses, consider renting or buying a wide angle lens like the 16-35mm f/2.8 and a mid-range telephoto lens like the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.
Try to capture the entire story of the event, from beginning to the end. Set your camera to burst mode and concentrate on capturing the main reaction of the audience.
If you have a few years of experience and not too much overhead cost in your photography accessories, you can charge anywhere form $75 to $125 per hour and the more you do this the more you will be able to charge.
